AS SAIKI HAD SUSPECTED, the High Priest didnât lead him to Fort North. Without explaining why, he veered off the main column of refugees, off the road, toward one of the smaller towns theyâd passed through a few days back.
âWhy?â Saiki asked as they tread on the townâs narrow road. âWhy not Fort North?â
The High Priest didnât reply. It made Saikiâs chest tight with anger.
Heâd never felt such anger in his life, especially not when it came to Tau. He didnât know what to do with the feeling, how to push it down again. Heâd always believed that Tau did what was best for the world, the temple, the priests, and by extension Saiki.
He wasnât so sure anymore.
Strange thoughts. As Tau led the way to one of the house theyâd visited, where theyâd delivered a baby, he examined the feeling. Was he really angry that Tau was taking decisions without consulting him first?
Or was it because Tau seemed to be doing all he could to keep him away from the king?
Frowning, he went through the motions, turning this new thought over and over in his head. The Sire theyâd met on their previous visit rushed out to help them dismount and take away their horses, welcoming them. His Bearer and Mate appeared at the door of the house, his newborn son in his arms.
âCome on in,â he said. âWhat terrible news, the attack on the town. I trust you werenât injured?â
âThank you for your hospitality,â Tau said, bowing. âWe are both well, with Melekâs grace, but you are right, it has been terrible.â
âPlease, come in, make yourselves comfortable. We were about to eat, so please join us. You must be hungry and exhausted.â
Saiki couldnât speak for Tau who seemed as unchanging as the rocks, but speaking strictly for himself, yeah, he was starving and tired. Gratefully, he followed their host inside the cozy kitchen with its big table and old chairs, the warmth from the stove and the smell of stew.
Saikiâs stomach rumbled. âSorry.â
The Bearer chuckled. âDonât worry. When I was pregnant, I could eat all day and all night long. I think itâs pretty amazing that youâre out here, still traveling.â
Saiki thought so, too.
âCould you hold him?â The Bearer held out the baby to him and he automatically took the elfling, cradling its little body to his chest, over his belly. Large blue eyes stared up at him, and he found himself smiling.
In a moon or two heâd be holding his own babies in his arms. Would they have the kingâs green eyes, or his own dark ones? Would they look like Canan?
Suddenly his vision went blurry with tears.
Gods, he missed the king with a pain that bordered on the physical. Heâd do anything to see him again.
âAre you all right?â The Bearer gave him a concerned look. âAre you in pain?â
âNo, Iâm fine.â Gingerly, Saiki lowered himself in one of the chairs. âItâs just all been too much.â
âI can imagine.â
But the Bearer couldnât, not really. He thought Saiki
