AS SAIKI HAD SUSPECTED, the High Priest didn’t lead him to Fort North. Without explaining why, he veered off the main column of refugees, off the road, toward one of the smaller towns they’d passed through a few days back.

“Why?” Saiki asked as they tread on the town’s narrow road. “Why not Fort North?”

The High Priest didn’t reply. It made Saiki’s chest tight with anger.

He’d never felt such anger in his life, especially not when it came to Tau. He didn’t know what to do with the feeling, how to push it down again. He’d always believed that Tau did what was best for the world, the temple, the priests, and by extension Saiki.

He wasn’t so sure anymore.

Strange thoughts. As Tau led the way to one of the house they’d visited, where they’d delivered a baby, he examined the feeling. Was he really angry that Tau was taking decisions without consulting him first?

Or was it because Tau seemed to be doing all he could to keep him away from the king?

Frowning, he went through the motions, turning this new thought over and over in his head. The Sire they’d met on their previous visit rushed out to help them dismount and take away their horses, welcoming them. His Bearer and Mate appeared at the door of the house, his newborn son in his arms.

“Come on in,” he said. “What terrible news, the attack on the town. I trust you weren’t injured?”

“Thank you for your hospitality,” Tau said, bowing. “We are both well, with Melek’s grace, but you are right, it has been terrible.”

“Please, come in, make yourselves comfortable. We were about to eat, so please join us. You must be hungry and exhausted.”

Saiki couldn’t speak for Tau who seemed as unchanging as the rocks, but speaking strictly for himself, yeah, he was starving and tired. Gratefully, he followed their host inside the cozy kitchen with its big table and old chairs, the warmth from the stove and the smell of stew.

Saiki’s stomach rumbled. “Sorry.”

The Bearer chuckled. “Don’t worry. When I was pregnant, I could eat all day and all night long. I think it’s pretty amazing that you’re out here, still traveling.”

Saiki thought so, too.

“Could you hold him?” The Bearer held out the baby to him and he automatically took the elfling, cradling its little body to his chest, over his belly. Large blue eyes stared up at him, and he found himself smiling.

In a moon or two he’d be holding his own babies in his arms. Would they have the king’s green eyes, or his own dark ones? Would they look like Canan?

Suddenly his vision went blurry with tears.

Gods, he missed the king with a pain that bordered on the physical. He’d do anything to see him again.

“Are you all right?” The Bearer gave him a concerned look. “Are you in pain?”

“No, I’m fine.” Gingerly, Saiki lowered himself in one of the chairs. “It’s just all been too much.”

“I can imagine.”

But the Bearer couldn’t, not really. He thought Saiki
